Case Study:

The DOT’s “Careers in Motion” Web Site

CHALLENGE

Previously, the Department of Transportation’s career site (left) primarily consisted of general information and a list of links to its Operating Agencies’ independent career sites. The site lacked an “identity” and was rather difficult for job seekers to effectively explore.

As part of a strategic series of Departmental recruitment initiatives, the DOT decided to revise their site by creating a user-friendly, eye-catching environment that would connect with potential applicants on a personal level. More importantly, they wanted a Web site that could clearly inform individuals about DOT employment opportunities and the job application process. The decision to improve the site responded directly to their current and anticipated workforce needs and the human capital directives identified in the President’s Management Agenda.

SOLUTION

Monster Government Solutions worked with the DOT to develop an overall DOT Careers site that would help job seekers better understand the organization of the Department and better direct them to the Operating Agencies’ careers sites for more specific, in-depth information. The mission was to create a consistent message, look, and feel across their new Careers site, their USAJOBS homepage and their QuickHire homepage.

RESULT

In April 2004, the DOT launched the redesigned site, “Careers in Motion”. The new site is easier to navigate, more visually appealing, and includes special sections such as a refer-a-friend component and an events calendar. As one member of the DOT stated, “The new careers Web site is fantastic! It is keeping with current private and public sector recruitment best practices and acknowledges the importance of technology and the Internet to human resources.” Be sure to check it out at: careers.dot.gov
